California gay marriage
So it’s been announced – the Californian Supreme Court has ruled that state laws banning same sex marriage are discriminatory. The ruling was passed by a 4-3 majority by the Republican-dominated court.
Today’s ruling is estimated to affect more than 100,000 same sex couples living in California (Americas second-largest state). In effect lesbian and gay weddings will be able to take place from now on.
In terms of gay rights the ruling asserts that civil-partnerships are not full equality, and anything less than full equal marriage rights are just not enough. Take note Britain!
California joins Massachusetts in offering lesbian and gay couples the opportunity to marry.
There are already moves amongst religious-right organisations to get a measure on the November ballot in attempt to ban gay marriage in the national constitution. I will of course keep you updated so watch this space!
