John McCain and Ellen DeGeneres on gay marriage
Further to California’s announcement of legalising same-sex marriage, Republican senator (and presidential hopeful) John McCain recently appeared on Ellen DeGeneres’ TV talkshow ‘Ellen’.
In this clip, openly lesbian Ellen asks why gay people are any different to heterosexuals, likening any distinction between marriage and civil union to how black people and women were denied the right to vote at one time.
McCain says he has a ‘respectful disagreement’ with homosexual marriage, believing legal contracts and insurance rights to be ‘enough’.

It’s all well and good to say that something short of equality is ‘enough’ for another group but I doubt Mr. Upper Class Republican White Male American here has any real understanding of what it’s like to be a person apart. I find it’s difficult explaining to even my most open and liberal friends just quite what it’s like being in a minority group that is openly (and legally in many countries) discriminated against. It’s ridiculous to say that anything less than equality is ‘enough.’
