RuPaul’s Drag Race

What do we know about RuPaul’s Drag race? Well the show is basically a strange collision of America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway but with Drag Queens as the contestants!
RuPaul who rose to fame in the 90s for his club hit ‘Supermodel’ hosts the show which aims to find the next American drag superstar.

Like others in this genre, various ‘challenges’ are featured in the programme. Unfortunately aside from the obvious entertainment value, they don’t really appear relevant to the rest of the show or necessarily the outcome of the series.

Anything like this which parodies other ‘mainstream’ reality shows always runs the risk of becoming something of a joke. Combine that with queens with egos and it becomes a fiery combination. Drag race is treading a fine line however this seems to be part of the appeal.

Most reviews of the show I have read call it a ‘guilty pleasure’ and that’s probably the most perfect accolade this kind of show could have. Far from becoming a ‘look kids, point and laugh’ exercise the show has actually managed to remain good-hearted and (for all intents and purposes) essentially family-friendly. Yes there is sexual innuendo but what else would you expect in a show about a bunch of drag queens.

If you didn’t catch the show first time round why not download the first season from iTunes now?

Tighten those tuck-in pants, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
