This clip comes from the second season episode ‘The Midterms’. President Bartlet lambasts radio talk-show presenter Dr Jenna Jacobs for her homophobic views at a White House gathering. It is widely accepted that the fictional Dr Jacobs is based on real-life Dr Laura Schlessinger who regularly made homophobic comments on her own talk show.

Many of Bartlet’s biblical references are believed to derive from this open letter sent to Dr Laura in May 2000. At this same time her show was censored in Canada for “consistent characterization of the sexual behaviour of gays and lesbians as ‘abnormal,’ ‘aberrant,’ ‘deviant,’ ‘disordered,’ ‘dysfunctional,’ and ‘an error’”.

Thankfully no one listens to Dr Laura any more – her views became overly conservative and her constant homophobia made many listeners switch off. Dr Laura’s similarity to Dr Jacobs doesn’t stop there; her doctorate is in physiology not psychology, misleading many listeners. Anyway, enough rambling – just watch the bloody thing!
