Match of the Gay
HotScot FC are the only gay football team in Scotland. The team aspire to play in the Gay World Cup.
Sadly the sport still remains fairly unaccommodating for gay players. Up to one in ten professional footballers in this country could be gay yet there is not a single openly gay player in professional football in the UK.
In 1990 Justin Fashanu became the first (and only) professional footballer to come out as gay. At the time he was berated by colleagues who said that gay people have no place in team sport. After a wealth of crowd abuse, malicious jokes from teammates and being disowned by his family, Justin took his own life in 1998.
