Right Said Fred is a British pop group formed by brothers Richard and Fred Fairbass in 1989. They are famous for their song I’m Too Sexy (1991) which was a #1 hit in the US, and remained at #2 in the UK for six weeks.

Richard is a bisexual man while his brother Fred is straight. The pair have been strong advocates of gay rights and both attended the infamous Gay Pride rally in Moscow’s Red Square in 2007. The rally was commemorating the 14th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Russia. Unfortunately a number of people attending the rally were attacked by ultra-nationalists and members of the Orthodox Church.

Both Richard and Fred were punched in the face and kicked in the body repeatedly. After the attack Fred said that their injuries were healing ‘faster than the deeper and more worrying wounds that fester inside the heads of those who attacked us and of those who were happy to watch and let it happen.’

The song below You’re My Mate remained in the German top 10 charts for most of 1996. It’s a great, campy, feel-good video with a pretty interesting use of bagpipes not normally heard in pop music!
