Selling Smiles – China’s Money Boys
In the last twenty years China has seen rapid growth in a number of industries as well as the emergence of new ones. It is estimated that China has over 10 million sex workers, many of which are male. ‘Money Boys’ as they are known, officially sell ‘smiles’ or massages but like many other countries, this is simply a cover for a far more personal service.
This clip from Currents Tom Bannigan explores the issue through the eyes of two male sex workers. Many sex workers in China’s cities are migrants from rural areas looking for well paid work. It is estimated that a Money Boys may earn up to $300 USD per month, around double the national average wage.
