Out in the Silence

Out in the Silence is an independent documentary film about a small American town dealing with the announcement of a same-sex wedding in the local paper. The film is shot in Oil City Pennsylvania; a run-down former industrial town. It is the kind of place where the values have remained unchanged for many generations where the church and the gun are both valued in equal measure.

Filmmaker Joe Wilson is contacted by Kathy Springer, a local woman following his wedding announcement in the paper. She is desperate for Wilson’s help because her son is subjected to homophobia at school and the school authority will do nothing to help. Springer and Wilson begin a long and difficult struggle against the school authority.

The marriage announcement also had a different affect on other local residents including Diane Gramley, head of the local chapter of the “American Family Association” (a far-right conservative group who oppose gay marriage equality or adoption rights). She is worried that Wilson is pushing the “homosexual agenda” in Oil City so she calls upon local residents to denounce same sex marriage as an unacceptable ‘perversion’.

The film documents four years of struggle for Wilson, his partner and several other gay residents of Oil City.
